“Saved by Grace” was Willie Outley’s first time recording an original song.
He came into the project with a clear gospel influence and wanted the song to carry some of the feeling he heard in Commissioned. But because this was his first recording experience, part of my role was helping him understand the process as we moved from the original idea into a complete production.
Finding the Sound of the Song
The arrangement developed around live guitars and layered background vocals. I wanted the track to have the energy and fullness Willie was looking for without losing the heart behind what he had written.
The background vocals became an important part of the record. Rather than simply filling space behind the lead, they helped give the song its lift and that familiar choir-driven gospel feeling.
Throughout the project, Willie was open to direction and willing to work through each step. Since everything was new to him, I tried to make the process clear and give him room to grow into the recording rather than expecting him to already know how everything worked.
After the song was completed, Willie shared:
“Mr. Hill is a very easy producer to work with and understood my musical vision right from the start. The advice that he gave me helped to make my song ‘Saved by Grace’ shine, and the background singers just blasted it into the stratosphere.”
What stands out to me about this project is not only the finished song. Willie stepped into a process he had never experienced before, trusted the direction, and followed the song through to completion.
For a first recording, that takes faith. “Saved by Grace” became more than an introduction to the studio for Willie. It became the first completed record in his journey as an artist.
